                     SPECIAL NEEDS

   Ready

Ready is 11 years old, but despite his age he still loves to chase a tennis ball and go for walks. He might not be the youngest guy on the block or the cutest but he makes up for it in attitude. He is 75 lbs. of what we call "Lab-a-tude" and would like to spend the rest of his days in a loving home. Ready is housebroke and we would like to see Ready in a home without children so that he can just relax through his golden years.

Dixie

Pet Photo

Dixie is a 3 yr old Great Dane and American Bulldog mix.  She is 83.6 lbs, so will need a big yard and 6ft fence to play in. She loves toys, plays ball and enjoys romping around the yard. Her size alone makes her a great watchdog but this dog needs a family. She is good with kids and other dogs but please NO cats. Please come out a meet Dixie, she was shy at first but she is coming out of her shell and warming up to the staff very quicky.

 Bronson

Pet Photo

Bronson is a beautiful 3 yr old golden lab that is full of energy and loves people. He is 85 lbs. and has had no training so we are working on the basic, walking on a leash, sitting and not jumping. Bronson will need a large yard (6ft fence) to play and exercise in and a big family would probably make him very happy. He is very sweet, but does bark to get attention - which can be changed through behavior modification.

Top 10 Reasons to Adopt a Black Dog

1. We cannot clash with your furniture or clothing - we know some of you actually worry about that.

2. We cannot clash with any collar you might choose either! Ditto for bandanas. Accessorize us!!!!

3. Ease of vaccuuming! You can quickly spot the areas of most urgent need.

4. Excellent night walk protection, the "bad guy" won't see us til it's too late!

5. We hide dirt well (doesn't mean we don't need that bath after a messy play, but your guests won't be able to see it so quickly).

6. We make an excellent "backdrop" for a second, more colorful dog if you choose to have more than one.

7. Availability!  We are available now at every shelter you can imagine, in every age bracket, no long waiting lists, no long search!

8. Status symbol potential. Black pearls are the most costly you know....

9. No annoying queries "what kind of dog is that" people are content with "big black dog" and don't ask!

10. We need you!

Chips

Pet Photo

Chips is a beautiful 7 year old brown-spotted Dalmation (neutered).  Chips is a very strong loveable Dalmation that has lived with his sister Choklit in a VERY large outdoor pen (30' X 40'). They would take daily walks with their owner around their property which was shared with some horses. Chips is food aggressive and his sister Choklit would gladly let Chips have all of the food.  Otherwise, Chips is a great companion and loves to go for walks.  Chips' food aggression can be resolved with proper intervention/training.

Hammy

January, 2008 - Hi, my name is Hammy and I'm an adorable young Terrier Mix, but I cannot hear well (perhaps not at all). I need to find someone who is patient, understanding and loving to help me develop into a trusting little lady. Most humans assume that I'm scared and timid and don't understand why I startle when someone comes up to me, it's because I have a hearing problem and not because I'm scared. I read human's faces and expressions when they are facing me and am probably more in-tune with what's happening around me than most, if truth be known. All I need is some special person to help me to adjust to becoming a wonderful member of your family.  Hammy has been at the Humane Society for about a year and we would love for her to find a special home.

Black dogs, particularly black labs or lab mixes, are euthanized at a horrifying rate at many pounds & shelters because people pass them up for lighter colored dogs.  When making your selection, please pay close attention to the beautiful black dogs who await a home.

This message brought to you by the thousands of big black dogs who will die today because no one realizes our wonderful potential
